It was a perfectly sunny day, the kind where the air shimmered and every leaf seemed to dance. Pixie, with her sparkling crown perched just so on her white pigtails, was outside with her cousin and best friend, Melody.
Pixie was excitedly carrying her favorite dolly, Hanni, snugly in a little front carrier.
Hanni had soft, painted features and big, curious eyes, just like a real baby. Melody, though, was still a little unsure about dolls. They were so still, yet somehow felt like they were watching. She held a tiny play bottle for the doll, taking sips now and then from her own imaginary drink, and watched as Pixie bounced Hanni gently. "Hanni is hungry, Melody!" Pixie announced, holding the doll up. "Do you want to help feed her?"
Melody hesitated, her eyes darting between Pixie's eager face and Hanni's unblinking gaze. She really wanted to play and be a good friend, and sometimes, a tiny part of her felt curious about what it would be like to pretend-feed Hanni. Slowly, she extended her hand, offering the doll's play bottle towards Hanni's mouth. It was a small, tentative gesture, but for Pixie, it was the biggest help in the world. "Good job, Melody!" Pixie cheered, and Melody even managed a tiny nervous smile. They continued their walk down the sun-dappled stone path, two friends, a doll, and a day full of tiny, brave moments.
